Inspite of the modernisation of lifestyles of most Nigerians, the rich culture and tradition of the people has refused to give way and this was evident at the just concluded Ekpo dance,
drama & drumming festival which took place over the weekend at Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Abuja.
The festival which featured 10 Ekpo Cultural troupes from different local government in Akwa Ibom state was targeted towards promoting the rich culture of Akwa Ibom state to other Nigerians and also to other part of the world.
In this regard, the former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Obong Victor Attah who was amongst the dignitaries who graced the occasion encouraged Nigerians and the government to help in promoting and preserving Nigeria's cultural heritage
Over the years, culture and tradition has remained a veritable tool for promoting peace, love, moral uprightness and respect for constituted authorities.
At a time when Nigerians are in dire need of foreign exchange through diversification of the economy, our culture can serve as a vehicle for contributing to the gross domestic product and can also create jobs for gifted artists who are in the creative industry
The Ekpo Cultural Dance, Drama & Drumming Festival is in line with the "Change begins with me initiative launched by president Muhammad Buhari to help retrace our steps back to those ethical values that once ensure the country's greatness & peaceful co-existence
The "Ekpo Society" is an Annang cultural play whose origin is synonymous with the history and migration of the "Annang" and "Ibibio" speaking tribes of Southern Nigeria
In ancient times, the Ekpo Society was a vehicle of change for the best form and organised system of regulation of traditional observances and as the soldiers of the kingdom
There were usually two segments to the administration and operation of Ekpo. One was the serious form which was activated and operated during war and as policing mechanism to maintain law and order in the ancient Annang kingdom, which dates back to the history and migration of the Ekpo Society from the ancient kingdom, formerly in present day Arochukwu
The role of the Ekpo Society was primarily as soldiers of the "New Annang and Ibibio kingdom" and they are scattered across present day Akwa Ibom state.
The other form of Ekpo was the type activated as a form of traditional dance, entertainment, play and drama.
