Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has stirred reactions after recounting how his mother secretly used him to smuggle cannabis to his late father, Fela Kuti, while the music legend was in detention.
Seun revealed that the incident happened when Fela was being held at the Federal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Alagbon. According to him, his mother, Fehintola Kuti, hid cannabis inside a loaf of bread and asked him to deliver it to his father during a prison visit.
At the time, Seun said he was only about eight or nine years old and had no clue that he was unknowingly carrying contraband into the detention facility. Trusting his mother, he simply handed the bread over to his father without suspecting anything unusual.
It was only after they had left the facility that Seun discovered what had happened. He said his sister later informed him that cannabis had been hidden in the bread, explaining that their mother had deliberately kept him in the dark so he wouldn’t accidentally expose the plan to the police.
Speaking on the shocking childhood memory, Seun said: “We were going to visit my father, and my mum bought bread to give to him. She hid Igbo inside the bread and asked me to hand it over. I was just eight or nine years old and had no idea what was happening.”
He added that his mother only told his sister because she feared he might innocently say something that would ruin the smuggling plan.
The revelation has added yet another dramatic chapter to the legendary and rebellious legacy of Fela Kuti and his family.
