Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed that the painful resistance he faced from his father nearly destroyed his passion for music and it is the reason he does not want his children pursuing careers in entertainment.
Speaking during an interview on The Breakfast Club, Davido said he would rather have his children work in the businesses owned by his billionaire father, Deji Adeleke, than struggle through the harsh realities of the entertainment industry.
The award-winning singer admitted that his father’s refusal to support his music dreams in the early days deeply hurt him and “killed” his happiness. According to Davido, it was only after proving that he was serious and determined that his father finally accepted his decision to pursue music.
Davido explained that watching his father spend time with his grandchildren made him realize that true happiness lies in family, not fame or wealth. He said seeing that changed his perspective and strengthened his desire for his children to choose a more secure and comfortable path in the family business instead of enduring the struggles he faced in the music industry.
Despite his concerns, the singer said he would not force his children away from entertainment if that is what they truly want. He disclosed that one of his daughters is already passionate about singing and dancing, and he would support her dreams rather than repeat the painful experience he went through.
In his words, Davido said his father’s opposition to his music ambition “really killed my joy,” adding that he would never want his children to suffer that same emotional pain.
