Supporters of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, have intensified efforts to facilitate his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite resistance from some party stakeholders.
Sources disclosed that during a caucus meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday night, members of the APC expressed opposition to the governor’s planned defection. The caucus reportedly argued that admitting Mohammed into the party could be detrimental, citing his past criticisms of the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
According to the sources, the governor’s previous remarks on federal policies were said to have contributed to division and tension within political circles.
However, a chieftain of the APC in Bauchi State, Aliyu Abdullahi Ilelah, dismissed the opposition, stating that a majority of party members in the state are willing to welcome the governor.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Bauchi, Ilelah described those opposing the move as self-serving politicians working against the party’s success in the 2027 elections.
He further alleged that the stance of the caucus was driven by personal interests rather than the collective good of the party, accusing them of attempting to block efforts by the party’s national leadership to engage the governor.
“It’s disrespectful to the leadership of the party and Mr President because while the President and the APC national leadership were busy reaching out to the governor, the so-called caucus are on the other hand making attempts to close doors against a sitting governor,” he said.
The development highlights growing internal debate within the APC over potential defections and party strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
