Aisha Yesufu, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of accepting bribes and land allocations to facilitate the removal of the party’s leadership.
The allegation comes after INEC derecognised David Mark as ADC National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, a move that has stirred reactions across political circles.
Speaking on the “Prime Time” programme on Arise Television, Yesufu claimed that INEC officials were allegedly offered sums of up to $50,000 and plots of land to support the leadership changes. She further alleged that the INEC Chairman was reportedly threatened into taking the action.
“Yes, there are reports that INEC officials were allegedly bribed with monies up to $50,000, and lands were given. Where is the EFCC and ICPC in all of this?” Yesufu said, referencing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Yesufu also expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s judiciary, warning that a lack of independence and accountability in key institutions could undermine the country’s democratic processes.
As of the filing of this report, INEC, EFCC, and ICPC have not issued official statements addressing the allegations.
