Borno State, Nigeria – An attack by militants from the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram has reportedly left a number of soldiers dead and others injured at a military base in Benesheikh, Kaga Local Government Area, military sources told SaharaReporters.
The assault occurred on Wednesday night when insurgents launched a coordinated attack on the Joint Task Force (JTF) camp in Benesheikh. Sources said the attackers used explosives and heavy gunfire, targeting the facility sporadically and causing numerous casualties.
Among the fatalities was Brigadier-General O.O. Braimah, 29 Brigade Commander, who was reportedly killed alongside the Imam of the Brigade and several senior officers. “He was killed last night along with many officers and soldiers. The attack lasted several hours. The camp is Benesheikh along Damaturu Road; it’s very unfortunate,” a military source said.
Many soldiers were seriously injured, while an unknown number of personnel remain missing.
The attack is part of a recent surge in violence by Boko Haram and its ISWAP faction across Borno State. In the past few weeks, militants have carried out a series of deadly raids on military and police facilities, leaving soldiers, police officers, and civilians dead while engaging security forces in prolonged firefights.
Earlier in March, Boko Haram fighters attacked military bases in Baga, Buratai, and Ajilari near Maiduguri, aiming to destabilize forward operating positions and weaken troop morale. Reinforcements from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Civilian Joint Task Force eventually repelled the attackers, but the raids highlighted the insurgents’ ability to strike multiple locations simultaneously.
Around the same period, ISWAP-linked insurgents targeted a Forward Base near Banki junction along the Bama–Gwaza Road, killing an Army Major and several soldiers before withdrawing after hours of heavy gunfire.
The Benesheikh attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram and its affiliates continue to threaten military installations and civilian communities.
