NiMet Predicts Sunshine, Cloudy Skies, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast a mix of sunshine, cloudy conditions, and thunderstorms across various parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency advised residents to take precautionary measures as strong winds and rainfall are expected in several areas.

According to NiMet, the northern region will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds on Monday morning, followed by thunderstorms with light rainfall later in the day, particularly in parts of Taraba State.

For Tuesday, similar conditions are expected, with possible morning thunderstorms in Taraba and Kaduna States, while moderate rainfall is anticipated later in the day in Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, and Kaduna States.

On Wednesday, the agency projected sunny morning conditions across the North, followed by thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, and Taraba States later in the day.

In the North-Central region, NiMet predicted cloudy weather with intervals of sunshine. Thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected in parts of Kogi and Benue States on Monday.

The agency further forecast isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall on Tuesday morning across the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa States, with more widespread thunderstorms expected later in the day.

By Wednesday, the region is likely to witness isolated morning thunderstorms, followed by more intense rainfall in the afternoon and evening.

For the southern region, NiMet projected cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine on Monday morning, with early thunderstorms expected over Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. The entire region is likely to experience light rainfall and thunderstorms later in the day.

On Tuesday, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across the southern states.

By Wednesday morning, strong chances of thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast for Lagos, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States, with widespread thunderstorms anticipated later in the day.

NiMet urged Nigerians to take safety precautions, warning that strong winds may precede rainfall in areas prone to thunderstorms.

“The public should ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision,” the agency stated.

It also advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall and recommended disconnecting electrical appliances during thunderstorms.

Residents were cautioned to stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches, while noting that high temperatures may cause thermal discomfort.

NiMet further advised the public to wear breathable clothing, stay in well-ventilated environments, and remain hydrated.

The agency also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning and encouraged residents to monitor updates through its official communication channels.
