The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports claiming that 17 soldiers, including a Brigade Commander, were killed during a recent terrorist attack in Benisheikh, describing the figures as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Sani Uba, clarified that only two officers and two soldiers lost their lives in the incident.
The Army expressed concern over what it described as widespread misinformation circulating across some television stations and social media platforms, noting that the reports were exaggerated and inaccurate.
According to Uba, claims that the Brigade Commander’s vehicle was unserviceable during the attack are also incorrect. He explained that the commander was operating in a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, which was only temporarily immobilised during the intense exchange of fire while he coordinated a counter-assault.
He further cautioned the public against relying on trending videos and images linked to the incident, stating that such materials are unrelated to the attack and are being used to spread false narratives.
The statement reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national security, adding that troops under Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled the attack and maintained control of their position.
“The Nigerian military strongly frowns at the distortion of operational facts and the use of such unfortunate incidents for propaganda,” the statement read, urging the public to rely only on official sources for accurate information.
The Army added that the failed attack highlights sustained pressure on terrorist groups and the increasing effectiveness of troops in the North-East region.
