Popular skit maker and actress KieKie, whose real name is Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, has stirred reactions after revealing that she lived with her husband for four months before their church wedding, saying it simply made more financial sense.
Speaking during an interview with Toke Makinwa, KieKie admitted that she moved in with her husband, Tunji Ilori, before their white wedding because renewing her rent for just a few months felt like a waste of money.
According to her, her rent was due to expire in September, while their church wedding was scheduled for January, and since they had already completed their traditional introduction rites, she saw no reason to pay for another apartment.
“My rent had expired, and we were getting married in January, so I said to myself, ‘Why pay another rent?’” she explained.
KieKie acknowledged that many people might judge the arrangement, especially because the church was unaware of the cohabitation, despite her active role as a singer in church at the time.
“People might judge it, but I wasn’t going to waste money. We’d already done our introduction. The church didn’t know about it, and I used to sing in church then,” she said.
She also clarified that although they were living under the same roof, their demanding work schedules and constant travels meant they barely spent time together at home, making the arrangement even more practical than romantic.
KieKie’s candid confession has sparked mixed reactions online, with some praising her honesty and financial wisdom, while others questioned the secrecy surrounding the arrangement because of her church involvement.
Her revelation has once again ignited debates over cohabitation before marriage, especially when financial convenience clashes with religious expectations.
