The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 28 for the hearing of a suit seeking to compel the Nigeria Police Force to reopen investigations into the controversial death of Nigerian singer, Mohbad.
The case, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, comes amid renewed pressure on authorities to revisit the circumstances surrounding the artiste’s death in September 2023, which sparked nationwide outrage.
The court has ordered that hearing notices be served on the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, mandating their appearance.
The suit was filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, a non-governmental organization, which is seeking a court order to compel the police to conduct what it describes as a “thorough, diligent, impartial, and professional” reinvestigation.
According to court documents, the group had earlier secured permission to apply for an order of mandamus, urging the police to carry out their statutory duties under the Police Act 2020.
Part of the demands includes summoning individuals who were last seen with the late singer, including his wife, Omowumi Cynthia Aloba, close associates, and his father, Joseph Aloba. The application also calls for a probe into the circumstances surrounding his controversial burial, which allegedly took place without prior police clearance.
Justice Omotosho further directed that court processes be served on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police through substituted means at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.
At the resumed hearing, counsel to the applicant, Chief Tunde Falola, confirmed that all respondents had been duly served in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/636/2026. The court subsequently adjourned proceedings to May 28.
The death of Mohbad at the age of 27 triggered massive protests under the #Justice4Mohbad movement, both within Nigeria and abroad, as fans demanded accountability and transparency.
Nearly three years after the incident, the case remains unresolved, with no major breakthrough a situation that continues to fuel public suspicion and calls for justice.
