Justice Binta Fatima Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has sentenced a major food supplier to Boko Haram insurgents, Hamatu Modu, to 40 years imprisonment for terrorism-related offences.
Modu was prosecuted by the Federal Government through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
The convict, who admitted in open court to supplying food items and intelligence to the terrorist group, was arraigned on a four-count charge and pleaded guilty to all counts.
The prosecution was led by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo.
Delivering judgment, Justice Nyako sentenced Modu to 10 years imprisonment on each of the four counts. However, following a plea by the defence counsel, the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, effectively reducing the total term to 10 years.
In a related development, the court also convicted another supplier, Isah Ali, for similar offences linked to terrorist activities in Borno State.
Ali was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment after pleading guilty, with the court ordering that his sentence take effect from the date of his arrest three years ago.
Justice Nyako further directed that both convicts undergo rehabilitation and deradicalisation programmes upon completion of their jail terms.
The court also ordered the Federal Ministry of Interior to designate the correctional facilities where the convicts will serve their sentences.
