The factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, has announced plans to bar politicians aged 55 and above from contesting for positions under his leadership.

Bala made the disclosure during an interview on BBC Hausa, outlining a vision focused on generational change and increased youth participation in politics.

According to him, the move is aimed at repositioning the party and creating opportunities for younger Nigerians to take up leadership roles.

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is a party that belongs to all Nigerians. What we are doing now is to ensure the party moves forward properly,” he said.

Bala argued that the time has come for young people to take the lead in shaping the country’s political future.

“We have decided that we will give the youths a real chance. The time has come for young people to take the lead in politics,” he stated.

He added that under his leadership, individuals above the age of 55 would not be eligible to contest for political offices within the party.

“If you are over 55 years old, you are not going to contest for positions in the ADC under our leadership,” Bala said.

The ADC chieftain maintained that the decision is intended to inject fresh ideas and energy into the political system, stressing that Nigeria’s future depends on the younger generation.

“We want to bring in fresh blood, new ideas, and energy from the youth. Nigeria’s future depends on the young generation,” he added.

Bala also criticised older political actors, arguing that their approaches have not delivered the desired progress for the country.

“The old ways have not worked well for the country. We need to open the door wide for youths to participate fully as candidates, leaders, and decision-makers,” he said.
